In the 1980s the first foreign record stores were opened in Japan. Alternative Japanese youth culture eagerly snatched up any foreign records they could get their hands on, hungry for anything other than the boy bands and punk rock groups of the time. They bought indiscriminately and reveled in simply hearing something different, something new, something they had never heard before. They then created music, with influences ranging from lounge to Bossa Nova to hip-hop to electropop. They were called Shibuya-Kei.

For those with the same exploratory and curious spirit of the 1990s generation of Japanese music culture, I have compiled a brief, varied playlist of what can loosely be termed “Shibuya-Kei”

Dubstep has been happening for something like two decades now, quite long enough for plenty of musicians to have deviated from the genre, taking its influences with them. In a sweeping act of pretention and boredom, I have compiled a playlist of music I feel falls into this category, and loosely dubbed it (see what I did there) “post-dubstep.”

Chances are you won’t like most of this. It’s a hard genre to appreciate.
